Mathias Grose was born circa 1787, probably in Cornwall. He and his family moved to the Isle of Man around 1826. In 1841 he was employed as the Mine Agent at the Foxdale mines, though his wife does not appear with the family. In 1851 his widowed wife, Mary, was living at 1, Woodhouse Terrace, Douglas, with three of their unmarried children. In 1861 she was keeping a lodging house at Summer Hill. At this time her birth place was given as Cornwall. She was buried on the 25th of November, 1864, at Marown when her age was recorded as 68 years.
Thomas Grose was born ca 1820, probably in Cornwall. In 1841 he was living with his father at Foxdale and described as an engineer. He does not appear in the 1851 census.
John Grose was born ca 1822, probably in Cornwall. In 1841 he was living with his father at Foxdale and described as an engineer. He does not appear in the 1851 census.
Mary Grose was born ca 1825, probably in Cornwall. In 1841 she was living with her father at Foxdale. She married Joseph Waterhouse on the 20th of April, 1850, at Braddan. The couple do not appear in the 1851 census.
Elizabeth Grose was born ca 1830 at Marown. A baptism has not been found. In 1841 she was living with her father at Foxdale mines. In 1851 she was living with her widowed mother at 1, Woodhouse Terrace, Douglas. In 1861 she living with her mother at Summer Hill. A marriage has not been found
Edmond Grose was born ca 1830 at Marown. In 1841 he was living with his father at Foxdale mines when his age was recorded as 10 years. He has not been found in the 1851 census.
Lavinia Grose was born ca 1833 at Marown. In 1841 she was living with her father at Foxdale mines. In 1851 she was living with her widowed mother at 1, Woodhouse Terrace, Douglas. She has not been found in the 1861 census.
Samuel Grose was born ca 1835 at Marown. In 1841 he was living with his father at Foxdale mines. In 1851 he was living with his widowed mother at 1, Woodhouse terrace, Douglas. In 1861 he was employed as a lead miner and was boarding at Darrag, Rushen. He has not been found in the 1871 census. He probably moved to Barrow in Furness and appears to be there in the 1891 and 1901 census boarding with John Hudson.
