James Quarried was born circa 1835 at Bride. In the three censues of 1841-61 he was living, unmarried, with his parents at the family farm at Ballavair, Bride. He married Jane Miller circa 1866, probably in Liverpool, though he returned to the Island was living in Malew by the census of 1871 when he was described as a miller and corn dealer. His four children were all born in Malew. The family emigrated to New Zealand circa 1877.
