Hugh Magee was born ca. 1800. Although every census return shows his birthplace as the Isle of Man no baptism has been found.
He married Elizabeth Skillicorn ca 1820. No marriage record has been found. The marriage may have taken place in Cumberland where their first child was born.
A wool dyer, Hugh appears to have worked at the various woollen mills at Lazxey, Union Mills, St. Johns and Onchan. In 1841 he and his family were living at Union Mills. In 1851 he was living at Balladoyne.
He was buried at Braddan on the 17th of November, 1859.
Isabella magee was born ca 1820 in Cumberland, England. She does not appear in the 1841 census for the Isle of Man. She married Charles Shimming on the 11th of November, 1843, at Marown. Her eldest son, William, was born in Marown but it seems likely that the family moved to Scotland as her other two children were born in Balckcraig, Scotland. Charles appears to have died around 1850 for Isabella appears in the 1851 census for the Island when she was described as "unmarried" rather than "widow". At this time she and her youngest son were living with her brother John while the other children were living with relatives. In 1861 she was living with her widowed mother. In 1871 she was living at 4, Church Street and supported by her children. She has not been found in the 1881 census though a burial has not been located.
